Summary Draft #1 : "4 Ways to Demolish a Building"

Summary Draft #1 (150 words)

In the article “4 Ways to Demolish a Building”, Rodriguez (2018) states that several factors are taken into consideration when planning a building demolition; the area, the building’s materials, and the purpose of the demolition.
Implosion involves the use of explosives, which is placed at identified areas through analysis of building’s blueprints. The author states High Reach Arm is an alternative and is typically used for buildings exceeding 66 feet. It involves a base machine fitted with a long demolition arm, which is attached to a crusher tool to break the building from the top. It is safer than Wrecking ball, which is a traditional and common practice of building demolition. The ball is suspended from a crane. This produces a high amount of noise, dust, and vibration. Selective Demolition is selective removing of the building’s materials. It allows builders to reuse and recycle them, resulting in its increasing popularity.

  1. Hi Jorine,
Thank you for this fluent and detailed summary. The main factors of demolition methods, as well as their pros and cons, were explained properly in the summary.
A few areas to take note of: The case for certain words could have been standardized, such as “High Reach Arm”, “Wrecking ball” and “Selective Demolition”. Also, the last sentence “It allows builders to reuse and recycle them, resulting in its increasing popularity.” Could have been explained clearer.

    Reagrds,
    Ken and Wendy

A New Chapter

Dear Prof, My name is Jorine Ng, and the purpose of this letter is to introduce myself. I am a Year 1 student attending your effective communication module. I graduated from Temasek Polytechnic with a diploma in facility management, along with a certificate in psychology. For the longest time, I wanted to work in the built environment industry.  I believed that saving energy was not always about peoples' efforts, but how the building is built as well.  I eventually decided to further my studies in the Sustainable Infrastructure Engineering (building services) program in SIT.  Aside from academic interests, I am interested in learning languages. I feel language is not only a way to communicate, but also a unique form of art. I have studied Japanese, and I am currently studying Korean. I also plan to pick up American Sign Language one day. With regards to my communication skills, I would say that I am confident in my ability to speak to people. I have no qualms starti...

Presentation Showcase Reflection

The module has come to an end with the presentation showcase. Despite my team not presenting at the showcase, it has been a wonderful day watching other groups present their ideas. Watching the other teams helped me to broaden my perspective on current issues in the industry as well as how effective non-verbal actions such as simple hand gestures can be when delivering a presentation. In regards to the presenting teams’ uses of audio-visuals, I had noticed that all presenting groups use slides that are simple yet informative slides to deliver their message to the audience. In my personal opinion, Team PES Green from my class has done a good job in delivering their message in their presentation. Even though I had seen them present before, they had done a lot of improvements in their presentation today. The team had neat yet informative slides that they used to be able to explain their points effectively. The members spoke with confidence and were informative about their own so...

(Unit 3, Task 2) Reflection

Growing up in a family where my parents loved to pamper me, I'd admit I was quite a spoiled kid in my younger days. In turn, that made me develop this bad habit of spending unnecessarily. By that, I meant impulsive spending. When I was younger, I really loved cute things, ranging from soft toys to room decorations. I would literally buy anything that I deemed as cute, without thinking about the practical use of the items, and the financial consequences. I bought items even when I don't need them. I bought clothes that I didn't wear. I bought books that I didn't read. Back then, I did not understand the value of money and, hence the consequences were not having much savings. I also constantly worked part-time in order to fuel the financial consequences of my impulsive spendings. It was only until I grew older that I understood the true value of money. During my first year in polytechnic, I had the opportunity to renovate my room. That was when I realized how much I ha...
